Three of the five people in my family have both gluten and dairy allergies which can make traveling quite a bit more difficult, and expensive! On our recent 9000 mile road trip we did a lot of fresh cooking and grocery store shopping instead of eating out – both to save money and out of necessity.
We explored South Bass Island in Put-in-Bay, Ohio this year for Green Island Week and we were thrilled to discover not just one but TWO AWESOME treat ideas that were BOTH gluten free and dairy free! There certainly may be more treats on the island that fit this bill and if so please share them with me in the comments so I can update my post!
Both of these treats are AMAZING on a hot day!!! Thanks to Miller Ferry for helping us discover amazing things to do outdoors in Put-in-Bay!
Where to Find Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Treats in Put-in-Bay:
1.Dan Dee’s Snack Shack at Perry’s Cave
Dan Dee’s Snack Shack at Perry’s Cave sells these amazing lemon ice treats – and they were ONLY $1.50! We discovered it while we were playing mini golf there on a hot day. My husband went over to the snack shack to get us a water bottle and discovered them!
We were all just going to split a cold water expecting everything to be over priced but for $1.50 we each got a lemon ice! Definitely a much needed discovery for us! While you’re there make sure to check out the Butterfly House and Perry’s Cave which is 55 feet under the ground!
Perry’s Cave is located at 979 Catawba Avenue in Put-In-Bay. When you arrive you’ll find Dan Dee’s Snack Shack next to the golf course near the antique barn shed not far from the Cave building!
2. Dairy Isle near Perry’s Victory & International Peace Monument
Dairy Isle is a popular ice cream stop in Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island which isn’t that exciting for those of us with dairy allergies. However, the week before we visited the island I checked out their Facebook page and couldn’t believe it! Someone was holding a beloved Dole Whip which is completely dairy free (and gluten free)!
I couldn’t find the Dole Whip listed on their website so I was trying not to get my hopes up that we’ve find Dole Whip in Put-in-Bay but YEEEESSSS! Dairy Isle has Dole Whip! AND it was only a couple bucks! SO YUMMY! We decided to drive our golf cart across the street to Perry’s Victory & International Peace Monument to enjoy our Dole Whip. You can’t beat the view and there’s plenty of room for the kids to run around!
Dairy Isle is located in Put-in-Bay at 213 Bayview Avenue. It’s VERY easy to find! From much of the island you can see the tall tower of Perry’s Monument, and the Dairy Isle is across the street from the visitor center area towards the lake.
I can’t verify for sure but you can usually find smoothies and just ask for no yogurt to be added too!
