While on our 9000 mile road trip we decided to divert off of Route 66 so the kids could visit and take photos with aliens in Roswell, New Mexico. They are obsessed with aliens and I KNEW I could find the best places to take photos with aliens in Roswell, New Mexico! It was definitely worth a quick side trip to stop in for a few hours and take some fun pictures!
I’m not exactly sure what I expected when visiting Roswell but for the most part it looked like any other town we’ve ever driven through…..until you hit the block or so surrounding the International UFO Museum & Research Center. Then aliens are on every street corner – even the city lamp posts had aliens on them! It was so over touristy but fun for the kids.
1. International UFO Museum & Research Center:
The International UFO Museum & Research Center is a really cool place for kids around ages 10+…..if they are interested in aliens! I had my 4 year old in tow and aside from an alien statue or two, she was extremely disinterested in the museum as most of it is reading newspaper articles and research plaques.
I unfortunately did not get the chance to read much of anything as I was trying to keep her occupied so her brothers could enjoy the museum. The museum covered everything from flashing lights and the fakest alien ship display (but totally cool!) and far out theories to newspaper articles and documented resources revolving the famous Roswell alien crash.
So be forewarned if you have young kids – they will get bored in this museum in a quick heartbeat! It’s more reading documentation then quirky displays (although there are those too!) If you’re anywhere near Roswell though, it’s certainly worth the one-time stop in to check out the museum to say you’ve been there.
That being said there is one AWESOME interactive display in the middle of the room that lights up and drops fog every 15 minutes or so which is totally worth seeing! Be prepared for noises and fog and quite the light show. It left me wishing the ENTIRE museum were more animated!
In the back of the museum is also a few photo worthy spots to snap a quick pic at. But if you are looking for some EPIC alien photos in Roswell then you absolutely want to talk over to Alien Zone. The gift shop though at the museum is quite extensive and has some really awesome alien gifts!
Since we had such a short time just passing through Roswell, I wish we would have bought more souvenirs here at the International UFO Museum gift shop.
2. Alien Zone – Best Choice for Alien Photos!:
I am SOOOO glad I discovered Alien Zone before we left Roswell! Be forewarned – it’s cheesy….like beyond cheesy….but it’s totally worth it! It’s within walking distance of the International UFO Museum & Research Center and the “FUN” rate is off the charts if you’re looking for crazy alien photos!
Basically you pay an entrance fee (it was $3/person when we visited), enter this dark hallway, and come to a large segmented room with random alien photo props.
Don’t think about who all has been there chilling on this couch with this alien……he has seen some things….
There’s a backyard bbq with alien zone, aliens hanging from upside down off the ceiling, and all other sorts of crazy poses and scenarios! There’s even an alien sitting in a port a potty! It’s totally fake and over the top props in a warehouse type set up but it’s a blast for fun silly pictures!
My 4 year old tends to be pretty easily skittish but since nothing scary was loud or popped out at her she seemed to be OK in Alien Zone regardless of the darkness between each alien scene.
It’s a great spot for weird family photos, kids, kitchy trips with friends, etc. If you’re not ALL IN with some wildly fake and fun pictures then I recommend skipping Alien Zone. It definitely depends on your personality and what kind of experience you are looking for.
Don’t be shy – the craziest pictures make the most fun memories! A few of the scenes are fairly dimly lit so if you’ve got a camera or phone that does well in low light that will help. Otherwise many of the scenes are well lit for the average phone. It was certainly a wild experience I won’t forget!
3. Gas Stations & Local Restaurants:
As you drive near the International UFO Museum you’ll easily be able to spot aliens all over the place! In front of gas stations, fast food restaurants, and anywhere else you can think of. Just pull over into a business and pop out of your vehicle for some photo opps!
There’s no mistaking that you are in Roswell!
If you have an extra half hour in your schedule I recommend just parking downtown and walking around for a while. You’ll find stores with fun front window displays practically begging for photos to showcase aliens!
