I was planning a surprise trip to Houston for my son’s 16th birthday, and I discovered the COOLEST AirBNB in the Houston area! I do NOT know the owner, this is NOT sponsored, but it IS the coolest surprise find I found out there!!
If you’ve already peaked at the pictures below – YES – it’s an overnight stay in a jail cell! It’s not really at a prison, but it’s in the “basement” or separate section of someone’s house. And let me tell you, this is no ordinary house. It’s lush, exotic, and stunning. It seems the owner is a worldwide travel writer and explorer.
While we had access to most of the rest of the house with a shared kitchen space, we had private jail space. I mean, how many 16 year old boys can stay they stayed in a jail cell for their birthday?! It was a REALLY cool surprise!
We had decided to drive over to the Houston area for a Franki Valli concert that my son had been asking to attend for two years. As you can see above there are bunk beds inside the jail cell, which is where my son slept. I slept on a pull out couch.
There were even inmate clothing you could wear! And for those that enjoy the macabre, there was also a prop electric chair just outside the cell. Absolutely everything was perfectly themed. There was even a secret escape hatch which led outside to a private patio next to the pool!
Let me tell you, we had some serious fun taking photos in this house! True to our style, we did not actually spend much time at the house as we were extremely busy touring the Houston area, but it was a cool place to lay our head at night and live like the 1%!
And you won’t believe it, but it was only about $79 for the night!! You can view the listing and book it here.
Every room in the house was extravagantly themed to somewhere the owner had been in his travels. I love a flair for Egyptian decor so I definitely poked around the house to see the other rooms!
This was more like just a show room but it was absolutely stunning as you can see.
This house just blew my mind. I definitely appreciated the chance to rent a room in this house. It was quite an experience for my son and I.
This here was the living room. I always feel kind of awkward just hanging out in someone’s house since it IS a shared space, but there was nobody else there during our stay.
Here’s another view of the same living room, and the view we see as we walk in through the house. Wowza right?! You can peer out that back window to see the pool area.
This was a front sitting room area.
I had to remind myself to close my jaw and look up and everywhere in the room – look at this art work and architecture!
And just because it was set nicely for display, even the dining room was stunning.
Look at this pool area!!! We didn’t go in as we literally checked in to drop off our stuff, went to our concert, and then came back around midnight. We just didn’t have time but it sure was a shame to skip this lush pool area!
I wish so badly we had had the time to use the pool because it looked so incredible!
I will say that the jail cell area is so much cooler than this blog post makes it sound too! But I didn’t want to ruin the surprises and special touches that are found inside. It was definitely a memorable birthday for my son!
While we were in Houston, we lucked out and the Stranger Things pop up Scoops Ahoy cafe was in town so we did that, the Franki Valli concert, NASA, and the Color Pop Factory. Oh, and of course, we had to stop in at Voodoo Donuts!

What a great take on this house.
Our friend Bill “The traveling wizard” owns the house and today on a layover we got to go see his homes.
This was the most opulent of his Rentals.
But we enjoyed his Rock n Roll retreat with his themed rooms. In fact, the whole house is a tribute to rock’s greatest stars.
And if you’re in the cruising mood, his brand, new pirate boat themed Airbnb on the water is for you.

Kansas City has great museums-If you like baseball there is the Negro Baseball Hall of Fame. Right next door is the Jazz museum for music lovers. There is the WWII museum which is fantastic I hear (I need to go, it is on my list) if you are into the that type of history. There is also Steamboat Arabia museum which has the treasures of a sunken river boat on its way to deliver merchandise to stores. Kansas City is also a host city for the World Cup if you are a soccer fan.
